Use it to picture the area. For property registration or land records, confirm at the SDM office.

The Post Office Hierarchy Nobody Explains
This is the part that resolves most address arguments, and it is not on any other page about this district.
India Post does not treat all these pincodes as equals. There is a hierarchy: a Head Office (HO) sits at the top, Sub Offices (SO) below it, and Branch Offices (BO) below those. Only some offices actually perform delivery.

Three things follow from this table, and each of them explains a real-world annoyance.
- Kalkaji is the Head Post Office for almost the whole district.
Nine of the ten pincodes sit under it. That is why couriers and logistics systems often label an address anywhere from Lajpat Nagar to Badarpur as “Kalkaji” at the sorting stage. - The northern strip is the exception.
Nizamuddin (110013) and Jangpura (110014) report to Lodi Road HO, not Kalkaji. Lodi Road sits in New Delhi district. This is the single biggest reason the northern localities get filed under a different district label in postal and delivery systems than the rest of South East Delhi. - Your delivery office is usually not the office named after your colony.
If you live in Defence Colony, the office that actually delivers your post is Lajpat Nagar SO. In Greater Kailash II, it is Greater Kailash SO. In East of Kailash, it is Sriniwaspuri SO. When a courier asks for your “nearest post office”, the delivery office is the useful answer.

Why a Locality Name, a Pincode and a District Do Not Always Match
A locality name is what people call the place. It has no legal boundary at all. “Okhla” can mean the industrial area, Okhla Vihar, Okhla Village or the whole Jamia Nagar belt depending on who is speaking.
A pincode describes a delivery route, drawn around what is efficient for a postman to walk. That is why one colony can span two pincodes and two unrelated colonies can share one.
A revenue sub-division is a land-records boundary. It decides which SDM office and sub-registrar handle your property.
A property-market boundary is a marketing convention. Agents routinely describe a flat as being in “Greater Kailash” when it is technically in Zamrudpur, because the better-known name sells faster.
When these four disagree, none of them is wrong. They are answering different questions. The full set of overlapping systems is mapped in the administrative section below.
Which Side of Delhi Is South East Delhi On?
In short: the wedge between the Yamuna on the east and South Delhi on the west, running from Nizamuddin down to the Faridabad border.
South East Delhi occupies the south-eastern corner of the National Capital Territory. Its shape is long and narrow rather than square, because it follows the Mathura Road corridor south from the Ring Road to the Haryana boundary.
Its neighbours are straightforward once you picture that corridor. South Delhi district lies to the west, which is why Saket, Malviya Nagar and Chhatarpur are next door but not inside it. Faridabad district in Haryana lies to the south, immediately past Badarpur border. The Yamuna forms the eastern edge, with Noida on the far bank. New Delhi district and East Delhi district sit to the north-west and north-east.
The practical orientation points:
- Mathura Road (NH-19) is the district’s spine, running north to south through Nizamuddin, Ashram, Sarita Vihar and Badarpur.
- The Ring Road clips the northern edge through Ashram Chowk and Sarai Kale Khan.
- The Outer Ring Road crosses the middle at Nehru Place and Modi Mill.
- Mehrauli-Badarpur Road (MB Road) runs east to west across the southern belt, connecting to Saket and Mehrauli.
- The DND Flyway and the Kalindi Kunj bridge are the two main crossings into Noida.
- The Barapullah elevated corridor links the Nizamuddin end westward toward the Sarai Kale Khan and INA side without touching the Ring Road.
Critical Clarification: This Is Not a Part of South Delhi
South East Delhi is a separate revenue district, not a sub-division of South Delhi. It has had its own District Magistrate since 2012, with headquarters at Defence Colony.
The confusion is understandable. Colloquially, most Delhi residents call the whole belt “South Delhi”, and much of this area was administratively part of South Delhi before 2012. Property listings, schools and some government forms still use the older habit. But for revenue documents, property registration or anything routed through a District Magistrate, South East is its own answer.
How South East Delhi Came Into Existence
In short: it was carved out of South Delhi and neighbouring districts in 2012, when Delhi went from 9 revenue districts to 11.
Before 2012, this entire belt was administered as part of other districts, mostly South Delhi. The colonies were not new. Defence Colony was built in the 1960s for armed forces veterans. Greater Kailash, Kalkaji and CR Park grew through the 1960s and 1970s. Okhla Industrial Area was developed as Delhi’s south-eastern manufacturing base. Sarita Vihar was originally planned as the 1982 Asian Games village site before the plan changed and it became a residential colony.
What changed in 2012 was administrative, not physical. Delhi added two new revenue districts, South East and Shahdara, taking the total to 11. The reason was workload: South Delhi as it then stood was one of the largest and most densely populated districts in the city, and splitting it made land records, certificates and registration manageable.
Because the district was created after the 2011 Census fieldwork was completed, independent census statistics for South East Delhi as a unit do not exist. Any population figure you see quoted for the district is derived from the pre-2012 boundaries rather than measured against the current ones. That gap will only close with Census 2027 data.
Two things follow from the 2012 origin that still cause confusion today. Older documents, older signage and older websites use the pre-2012 district name for addresses here. And because the district is recent, several parallel systems, particularly postal and police, never fully redrew their own boundaries to match it.

What Changed on 1 January 2026
This is the part almost every other page on this topic still gets wrong.
In December 2025, the Delhi Cabinet approved a reorganisation of the city’s revenue districts, and it took effect on 1 January 2026. Delhi went from 11 revenue districts to 13, with Old Delhi and Central North created and Shahdara dissolved. Across the city, sub-divisions rose from 33 to 39, and sub-registrar offices from 22 to 39.
South East Delhi survived as a district. What changed was the naming and boundary of its three sub-divisions:

The stated purpose was to make revenue district boundaries match municipal boundaries, so the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the NDMC and the Delhi Cantonment Board no longer operate on a different map from the Revenue Department. Officials cited delays in grievance redressal, land record management and enforcement as the reason.
If Your Documents Show the Old Names
Pre-2026 paperwork is not invalid. It simply refers to a structure that has since been renamed and redrawn. Use this to translate:

Because boundaries were adjusted and not only renamed, a locality near the edge of an old sub-division may now fall under a different office. If your matter involves registration, mutation or a land record, confirm the current jurisdiction at the SDM office before filing anything.
Tehsils, and Why the Word Keeps Appearing
A tehsil is the revenue unit inside a sub-division. It is where land records live, headed by a Tehsildar. Before 2026, South East Delhi’s tehsils were named Jangpura, Kalkaji and Badarpur, while its sub-divisions carried different names. That mismatch is exactly why so many pages describe the district as having two separate three-item lists.
After the reorganisation, the two levels carry the same three names. If a website presents “subdivisions” and “revenue tehsils” as two different sets for this district, it is describing the pre-2026 arrangement.
Why You Will Still See the Old Names
Because the government’s own websites have not all caught up.
At the time of writing, the District Magistrate (South East) site’s “About District” page still described the district as divided into Defence Colony, Sarita Vihar and Kalkaji, while the same site’s Divisions menu and the Government of India’s Local Government Directory both listed Badarpur, Jangpura and Kalkaji. Both pages are official. One is simply older.
If you are reading a page that lists Defence Colony and Sarita Vihar as sub-divisions, you are reading pre-2026 information. That does not make its locality information wrong, but it does date the page.
The Six Overlapping Boundary Systems
Any locality here sits inside at least six official boundaries, drawn by different departments at different times for different purposes.

One useful consequence: an address can legitimately be in South East Delhi district, served by a post office labelled South Delhi, policed from a station in a different police sub-division, and vote in the East Delhi parliamentary constituency, all at once. None of those contradict each other.
There is a specific quirk on the postal side worth knowing. India Post’s published dataset splits the district’s pincodes across two postal district labels. Codes including 110003, 110013, 110014, 110019, 110020, 110024, 110025, 110044, 110048, 110049 and 110065 appear under a “South East” label, while 110076 sits under “South”. Several appear under both. Postal district labels were never designed to track revenue districts, and they do not.

Delhi Police runs its own district structure, and the South-East police district is headquartered at PS Sarita Vihar. Its police sub-divisions have historically been New Friends Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Sarita Vihar and Badarpur.

Two caveats worth stating plainly. Police jurisdictions have shifted more than once and do not track the revenue sub-divisions, so a colony’s police station may sit in a different administrative grouping from its SDM. And station-level coverage areas are not published as precise boundary maps, so treat this table as orientation. For an FIR or a police verification, confirm the station by address rather than by colony name.

Two things in this table look wrong and are not.
Sangam Vihar appears here even though the Sangam Vihar locality is in South Delhi district. Assembly boundaries were drawn by the Delimitation Commission on population, not on revenue district lines.
Greater Kailash does not appear, even though GK-I and GK-II are firmly inside the district. The Greater Kailash assembly constituency is administered on the New Delhi side. This is the clearest single example of why “which district am I in” and “which constituency do I vote in” are separate questions with separate answers.
The Okhla constituency officially includes Shaheen Bagh, Zakir Nagar, Okhla Vihar, Madanpur Khadar village, Khizrabad village, Jasola village, Ali village and Taimoor Nagar, which is a useful cross-check for anyone unsure whether those localities sit inside the district.
The district’s areas therefore span three parliamentary constituencies: South Delhi, East Delhi and New Delhi.
South East Delhi vs South Delhi vs East Delhi
In short: if it is on or east of the Nehru Place to Sarita Vihar line, it is South East. Saket and Mehrauli are South. Anything across the Yamuna is East.

The Yamuna is the reliable test for the South East and East distinction. If you cross the river, you have left South East Delhi.

Best Areas in South East Delhi, by What You Actually Need
There is no single best area, and any page that names one is selling something. What follows matches common requirements to the localities that genuinely fit them, with the trade-off stated in each case.
If Metro Access Is Your First Priority
Kalkaji, Nehru Place, Govindpuri, Sarita Vihar, Jasola Vihar, Lajpat Nagar.
Why: all sit within short walking distance of an operating station, and Kalkaji Mandir and Lajpat Nagar are interchanges, which removes a leg from most cross-city journeys.
Trade-off: the metro-adjacent localities here are also the loudest and most congested at street level. Govindpuri in particular is very densely built.
If You Are a Student or Early-Career Professional on a Budget
Jamia Nagar, Zakir Nagar, Batla House, Abul Fazal Enclave, Govindpuri, Madanpur Khadar, Molarband.
Why: the district’s most affordable rental stock, a large existing paying-guest and shared-flat market, and direct Magenta Line access to campuses and the Noida employment belt.
Trade-off: high building density, narrow lanes, variable water supply and limited parking. Inspect the specific building rather than judging by the locality name.
If You Want a Quiet, Established Residential Colony
Defence Colony, Greater Kailash I and II, New Friends Colony, Friends Colony East and West, Maharani Bagh, Kalindi Colony, Nizamuddin East.
Why: planned low-rise colonies with mature tree cover, active resident welfare associations and well-maintained internal roads.
Trade-off: these carry the district’s highest rents by a wide margin, and much of the stock is older builder-floor construction with fewer modern amenities than a newer apartment complex.
If You Are Moving with a Family
Sarita Vihar, Alaknanda, CR Park, Sukhdev Vihar, Greater Kailash II.
Why: a good density of schools, parks and everyday retail inside the colony itself, plus internal layouts that were planned rather than grown.
Trade-off: Sarita Vihar and Alaknanda sit further from the district’s northern dining and social hubs, so you trade evening convenience for daytime calm.
If You Commute to Noida or Faridabad
Sarita Vihar, Jasola Vihar, Madanpur Khadar, Shaheen Bagh, Badarpur, Mohan Cooperative.
Why: direct access to the Kalindi Kunj bridge for Noida and to Mathura Road for Faridabad, plus Violet Line stations that continue into Faridabad.
Trade-off: Ashram and Badarpur border are two of the most reliably congested points in the city at peak hours. Test the actual commute at the time you would be doing it, not at midday.
If You Work at Nehru Place or Okhla
Kalkaji, Kalkaji Extension, East of Kailash, Sant Nagar, Harkesh Nagar, Sukhdev Vihar, Srinivaspuri.
Why: walking or single-station distance to the district’s two biggest employment clusters.
Trade-off: Okhla-adjacent housing sits near active industrial and commercial traffic, which affects both noise and air quality on the main roads.
If You Want a Heritage Setting
Nizamuddin East, Nizamuddin West, Kalkaji, Tughlakabad Village.
Why: these sit beside Humayun’s Tomb, the Nizamuddin Dargah complex, the Kalkaji temple precinct and Tughlaqabad Fort respectively. Nizamuddin East in particular is one of the few Delhi colonies where a world heritage site is the view from the colony’s edge.
Trade-off: heritage adjacency brings visitor footfall, event-day congestion and, around the Dargah and Kalkaji, sustained crowding on religious occasions. Construction and renovation rules can also be tighter near protected monuments.

Two honest notes on using this. Within any one locality, rent varies more between two buildings on the same street, by floor, age, lift and furnishing, than it does between two neighbouring localities. For families choosing on schooling, one practical warning: measure distance by road and by gate, not by straight-line map distance. A school on the far side of a colony wall can be a long detour to reach.
Metro Connectivity in South East Delhi
In short: three operating lines. Violet runs the full length of the district, Magenta serves the Okhla and Jamia belt, Pink covers the northern edge.
Violet Line: the Spine
The Violet Line (Kashmere Gate to Raja Nahar Singh, Ballabhgarh) does more work here than any other corridor. It enters at Jangpura and runs south to the Haryana border.
The final column is the honest one. “Walkable” means most residents of the named localities can reach the station on foot in normal weather. “Short hop” means an auto, e-rickshaw or feeder ride for most of the locality.

What Is Coming
Two Phase 4 corridors will change the picture at the district’s edges. Neither was open as of August 2026.
The Golden Line (Line 10, Aerocity to Tughlakabad) touches the district at its southern end, with stations planned at Tughlakabad and Tughlakabad Railway Colony and an interchange with the Violet Line. DMRC reported the corridor at just over 71 percent complete in April 2026, with construction targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Independent trackers have suggested commercial opening may slip beyond that. If you are choosing a home on the strength of this line, treat the opening date as uncertain rather than fixed.
Line 11 (Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block), approved in March 2024, would run as a spur of the Golden Line with stations including Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj and Greater Kailash I. This matters because Greater Kailash I currently has no station inside the colony. Construction timelines for this branch remain long.
Why South East Delhi Is Growing
In short: it is where Delhi’s road and metro investment has concentrated, and where the city physically meets Noida and Faridabad.
- It is the interchange between three job markets: Central Delhi is 15 to 25 minutes north, Noida is across the Kalindi Kunj bridge, and Faridabad continues straight down the Violet Line. Few Delhi districts let one household serve three employment geographies without moving.
- The commercial base is already here: Nehru Place remains one of North India’s largest technology and office markets. Okhla Industrial Area Phases I to III and Mohan Cooperative hold manufacturing, offices, showrooms and studios. Jasola District Centre has grown into a corporate cluster of its own. A meaningful share of residents work inside the district.
- Road infrastructure has been actively rebuilt: The Ashram junction, historically one of the city’s worst bottlenecks, has been through underpass and flyover extension work. The DND to Faridabad to KMP corridor, connecting the Ring Road at the DND junction through the Kalindi bypass, Madanpur Khadar, Jaitpur and Meethapur toward the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway network, runs directly through the district’s southern localities.
- Institutional anchors bring steady demand: Jamia Millia Islamia, Apollo Hospitals on Mathura Road, Fortis Escorts at Okhla Road, Holy Family Hospital and a wide school network create rental demand that does not depend on any one employer.
- The housing range is unusually wide: Few Delhi districts hold Defence Colony and Molarband inside the same boundary. That means an unusually broad set of budgets can be served without leaving the district, which is a large part of why rental churn here stays high.
- A caution worth stating plainly: growth in infrastructure and commercial activity is documented. What it will do to prices in any specific colony is not, and nobody can tell you that with confidence.
Is South East Delhi Safe?
In short: there is no honest colony-level answer, because the data that exists is not published at colony level. Here is what does exist and how to use it.
You will find pages ranking South East Delhi localities by safety score. Those rankings are invented. It is worth understanding why, because the same reasoning protects you from a lot of bad property content.
Crime data in Delhi is published at police district level, not colony level. The National Crime Records Bureau publishes annual state and city figures. Delhi Police publishes district-level information. Neither publishes a per-colony crime rate, so any page presenting one has either made it up or derived it from user reviews, which measure perception rather than incidence.
Perception and incidence diverge sharply. A busy market street with high footfall often feels less safe at night while recording fewer incidents than an empty, poorly lit residential lane.
What you can actually do:
- Identify your police station from the table above, and visit it or call before finalising a lease. Station staff will tell you about local patterns in a way no website can.
- Walk the street at night, on a weekday, before signing. Look at street lighting, whether shops stay open, and whether there is foot traffic after 9 pm.
- Ask the RWA, not the broker. Established colonies in this district have active resident welfare associations with a realistic view of local issues.
- Check the specific lane, not the locality. In dense areas like Jamia Nagar, Govindpuri and Molarband, conditions vary street by street far more than they vary between localities.
- For women living alone, factor in the last-mile stretch from the metro station rather than the colony itself. That stretch is usually where the real difference lies, and it is measurable by walking it.
What to Check Before Renting in South East Delhi
The district’s variation is extreme, so the general Delhi rental advice matters more here than usual.
- Check the pincode on actual documents, not the listing: Listings routinely borrow a better-known neighbouring locality name. If your bank, employer or school needs an address match, the pincode on the electricity bill governs.
- Test the commute at commute time: Ashram, Badarpur border, Modi Mill and the Kalindi Kunj approach behave completely differently at 9 am than at 2 pm. A 20-minute midday drive can be 55 minutes on a Monday morning.
- Ask about water supply and pressure specifically: Supply quality varies street by street in the denser parts of the Jamia Nagar, Govindpuri and Molarband belts, and you cannot infer it from a building’s appearance.
- Confirm the parking arrangement in writing: In the older colonies (Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Bhogal, Kalkaji) parking is contested, and an informal understanding tends not to survive a change of neighbours.

Directory pages go stale. Here is the method rather than only the result.
- For a pincode: use India Post’s own pincode search at indiapost.gov.in. Search by locality name and confirm the delivery post office, not just the number. If the locality name does not appear, search the neighbouring colony or the post office name instead, since India Post indexes by office, not by colloquial locality name.
- For the revenue district and sub-division: check the Delhi e-District portal or the office of the District Magistrate (South East). For anything with legal consequence, the SDM office of the relevant sub-division is the authority, not a website.
- For the sub-district listing: the Government of India’s Local Government Directory publishes the current sub-district list per district, and it carried the post-2026 names earlier than several other government pages.
- For your assembly constituency: the Election Commission’s electoral roll search is definitive. District pages list constituencies but not street-level boundaries.
- For metro proximity: use DMRC’s official route map rather than a third-party distance calculator. Third-party commute and fare calculators return inconsistent results for identical station pairs.

South East Delhi is its own district, and its sub-divisions changed on 1 January 2026 to Jangpura, Kalkaji and Badarpur. If a source still lists Defence Colony and Sarita Vihar as sub-divisions, it predates the change. That single fact resolves most of the contradictory locality lists online.
Your pincode, your sub-division, your police station and your constituency are four separate answers. Kalkaji is the Head Post Office for nine of the district’s ten pincodes, but the Jangpura and Nizamuddin strip reports to Lodi Road instead. Greater Kailash sits inside the district but votes in a constituency administered from the New Delhi side. None of this is an error. They are different systems that were never designed to align.
Choose the belt before you choose the colony. The three belts behave differently enough that picking one narrows the search faster than any other filter:
- Choose the Jangpura belt if you want an established, low-density colony with short access to central Delhi, and the budget is there. Expect longer trips to the district’s northern social hubs and peak-hour delays at Badarpur border and Ashram.
